Blue Angels & Fourth of July Festivities

Updated: May 3, 2019
There are two major summer holidays that are always celebrated in Annapolis, Maryland. Despite stormy weather and rain, both Blue Angels and Independence Day are the favorite holidays of Annapolis residents. For people unfamiliar with Blue Angels, this holiday is presented as a celebration of the Naval Academy graduation and occurs each year around the middle of May. Blue Angels is a jet show in which 5 "blue angel" jets put on an air show for the entire downtown and suburban area. It is most exciting to watch the show from the water, over the Chesapeake Bay, in which thousands of people and boats gather to experience the 2 hour show. For anyone interested in this event, the airshow this year will be taking place on May 22nd. For people visiting from out of town,

sleeping arrangements within hotels and other overnight stays can be incredibly hard or expensive to find. It is advisable to book trips online way in advance. Otherwise, I would personally recommend visiting and staying with friends or family that may be close in the area. As far as parking is concerned, traffic through any part of Downtown Annapolis will be severely backed up, if not completely blocked off by police officials. Although I personally love Downtown Annapolis during Blue Angels, it is a lot less stressful and more enjoyable to watch the show from a more secluded spot, such as a friends backyard on the water or on a boat down the Severn River. Despite these struggles with traffic and parking, I still find the day to be worth it completely. The spirit throughout Annapolis is extremely fun to experience and there is a strong connection between the city and the people that is unforgettable, no matter who you are.
As for Fourth of July - one of the only holidays in the middle of the summer heat - it makes sense that this holiday would be one that caught the attention of all boat owners and water-lovers. Independence Day carries a similar energy as the Blue Angels show does. Residents of Annapolis have immense pride and excitement for what the day has to offer. As mentioned in my previous blog post - "Secret Beaches and Bay Areas" - Bay Ridge is known for having some of the best beaches and lakes. As a result, I usually spend every night of Fourth of July down at the Bay Ridge Beach watching some of the best firework shows that Annapolis has to offer. During the day, it is especially fun to go out on boats and enjoy the sun.
