Croquet: An Annapolitan Holiday

Updated: Mar 18, 2019
For today's post, I am introducing an annual event celebrated in Annapolis at the end of April! This event is celebrated throughout the entire city for people of all ages. The event is called the Annapolis Cup Croquet Match and it is a croquet match between the biggest rivals in Annapolis - St John's College (a small liberal arts college in Downtown Annapolis) and The United States Naval Academy. It is hosted in Downtown Annapolis on St. John's College soil. The Croquet Match takes place around the same time every year: the end of April. This year, the match is on Saturday April 27th. Although in previous years the event has been free, this event has become so popular that a maximum cap needed to be placed on the event. This year, tickets are being sold for 10 dollars each, but children under 13 can enter for free. For those at the legal drinking age, there is an open bar throughout the entirety of the event.

The attire for the match is very preppy. Women usually sport brands like Lilly Pulitzer and Ralph Lauren, wearing very classic and clean dresses. Wedges, as well as dressy sandals, are very popular as well. Men are usually found wearing pastel pants or khakis with blazers. For all attendees, it is safe to bring a rain jacket or an umbrella, as the event continues through rain or shine.

Navy midshipmen stand to the left, while Johnnies (St. John's College students) are pictured on the right.
The Johnnies have won 29 out of the 36 matches.
